VIDEO SWING NIGHT

Solo Jazz & Lindy Hop Workshop
Saturday November 7th

We're highlighting Lindy Hop & Solo Jazz this month at the Dance Factory, with a 3-hour workshop taught by Emma McAllister, followed by social swing dancing 8-11pm where all styles of swing dancing will be on display!  This workshop is for all levels of swing dancers, though familiarity with Lindy Hop will enable you to easily dance the second half material. It consists of two classes with a break in between.  Just $33 gets you into the workshop plus the dance.  Purchase tickets at the door (cash or card).  No partners are needed and all ages are welcome.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:  "I started Lindy Hop with no previous experience as a dancer.  Once I began studying, practicing, and performing solo jazz, my entire relationship to dance and the music changed for the better.  I began having so much more fun, and I found I loved building a connection to rhythms and shapes that could exist within a partnered dance or could sustain me dancing alone.  It's my goal in this workshop to make solo jazz feel welcoming, accessible, and fun for everybody, and to empower you to play around, have fun, and feel confident on the dance floor!"  —Emma

Class #1 — Solo Jazz Moves & Routine:  We'll focus on learning and getting comfortable with a variety of solo jazz moves.  We'll learn a short routine, then use those moves and others to learn how to improvise to any song.  You will leave this class with a bunch of new vocabulary, technique, variations, and ways to continue to practice and grow on your own!

Class #2 — Incorporating Jazz Moves into Lindy Hop:  We'll work on incorporating solo jazz into your Lindy Hop.  We'll look at how solo jazz shapes and rhythms can enrich your partner dancing, and we'll have both leaders and followers add their ideas to the dance.  You'll leave this class with specific moves that utilize solo jazz, and ways to experiment on your own incorporating solo jazz and individual expression into your social dancing.

INSTRUCTOR:  Emma McAllister encountered Lindy Hop in 2016 and has been hooked ever since!  She's danced across the globe in Turkey, Greece, Poland, England, and all across the USA, competing at Jumpin' at Istanbul, Retro Weekend (Warsaw), Uptown Swingout (Minneapolis), Portland Lindy Exchange, Camp Jitterbug (Seattle), and Stormy Weather Jazz Fest (Seattle).  At the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown in New Orleans, Emma and her partner won their first three dance battles and advanced all the way to quarterfinals!  Emma has taught at venues in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Port Townsend, Seattle, Tacoma, Los Angeles, and Tampa.  Her teaching emphasizes solid rhythmic foundations, playful improvisation, and solo-jazz-infused musicality.  She loves incorporating the stories of the original creators of this dance, and firmly believes anyone can learn!

The Dance Factory is a beautiful and spacious event venue with great atmosphere, located at 203 Westshore Plaza, Tampa, FL 33609.  Park and enter next to Maggiano's; once inside take your first right and walk to the end to find The Dance Factory.
